Casting a Shadow
Title: Casting a Shadow
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Year: 2024
Dimenions: 46 x 61cm
“Casting a Shadow” encapsulates the tension between visibility and hidden forces. The veiled figures symbolize the obscured facets of identity and tradition, casting metaphorical shadows of past experiences and suppressed emotions. The crow and scattered flowers evoke themes of mortality and decay, while the shadows behind the figures represent the lingering influence of memories and unseen forces shaping their existence. This work reflects the interplay of light and dark, seen and unseen, as it relates to personal and collective identity.

Rituals provide the impetus for Jude Wainwright’s work. A Manchester-based artist, her paintings explore repetition and habit: the empowerment and sense of control they create, alongside their capacity to teach and enable growth. Drawn from dreams and flashes of thought, Wainwright uses self portraiture to reconnect with herself.
Wainwright was named ‘Manc of The Month’ in November 2022 by Cotton On MCR and she reached the semi-final of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2022. Jude is also an associate member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Artists.
