Karl England
Karl England is a London-based artist, curator and organiser. His expanded practice lays bare a particular focus on the conceptualisation and methodologies of artist and curator-led organisation as a form of creative practice. Karl organises large-scale events under the moniker Sluice, which he co-founded with art historian Ben Street in 2011. Sluice works exclusively with artist and curator-led projects and non-profit galleries to realise ambitious fairs, expos and biennials in different cities around the world including London, New York, Berlin, Odense, and in late 2022 in Lisbon. Sluice also operated as a physical gallery space in East London from 2017 until 2019 and since 2015 it has also existed as a magazine which is published twice a year and is distributed internationally. Alongside all of this Karl has managed a municipal gallery and an institutional art collection on a freelance basis, since 2015.
Sluice - founded and run by artists and curators - assumes different forms in response to structural and environmental requirements in order to showcase artist and curator-led discourse, projects, collectives and galleries. Since 2011 Sluice has existed as a peripatetic expo, gallery, biennial, screening platform, publisher, symposium and residency. Headquartered in London, Sluice seeks the local, trans-nationally, maintaining a critical stance in relation to both the institution and the market.
